June 2019 – Ms. Kim O’Roark, CTRS, CADDCT, CDP, and Cognitive Theraputics Methods Manager of Home Care Assistance, who spoke to us in January, returned. Ms. O’Roark spoke about definitions of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, the biology for the brain and how it is impacted by dementia; communicating with someone with dementia; and not personalizing your interactions; and taking care of yourself as a caretaker.
July 2019 – “Catastrophes: Commonalities in Three Examples” – Systems Engineer and author Earl Boebert discusses how changes in corporate governance and culture over the past two decades have made the world a more dangerous place. His talk covers the organizational factors that contributed to the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, the loss of the steamship El Faro, and the Boeing 737 MAX failures.
Earl Boebert is a retired Senior Scientist at Sandia National Labs. Prior to joining Sandia, he was the technical founder and Chief Scientist of Secure Computing Corporation. Before that, he was a Senior Research Fellow at Honeywell. He has spent over 50 years building and analyzing complex systems. He is a National Associate of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and he is a co-author of Deepwater Horizon: A Systems Analysis of the Macondo Disaster, published by the Harvard University Press.
August 2019 – The Annual Picnic
The tables are set, the dishes put out, the fixings are set out, the hamburgers and the hot dogs uncovered–and the members enjoy wonderful meal! We had a fun time.
