PROGRAM – “The Story Behind the Movie “HUGO” by Andy Baron (of Santa Fe, and invited by the Franklin Institute Philadelphia, PA, to restore the 200-Year-Old, Inoperative Automaton)
See https://www.fi.edu/

During a private showing of the automaton, although it had been broken for some years, the Franklin Institute’s Senior Curator of Collections, and Charles Penniman, the automaton’s caretaker and exhibitor, demonstrated the distressed machine to the limited extent that it could be run. Based upon shared photos and video clips, Andy developed an understanding of its mechanical details.

As a restorer and engineer of mechanisms, Andy easily analyzed the automaton’s general principles of operation and distilled those observations into a brief description for Brian Selznick. At that time Brian was actively creating what would soon become the award-winning book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” He sent Andy a copy of his manuscript and some of his drawings for the book.

Andy was delighted to read the story, which was already essentially complete, and felt an immediate affinity for Hugo.

“Hugo” was a 2011 movie based on the book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” by Brian Selznick.

Andy will review his rewarding experience and the story explaining the necessary steps needed to restore the automaton to full operation.

The show was beautifully done; it contained photos of archaeological and other historical sites  in Israel, and also photos of modern-day Israel. Scripture passages and other descriptions highlighted the photos, as well as well-chosen background music. TUESDAY, AUGUST 9, 2022

(Due to technical difficulties, this program, originally presented in May, was not shown in its entirety.)

PROGRAM, Tuesday, August 9, 2022, “The Story Behind the Movie ‘HUGO’” by Andy Baron (of Santa Fe, and invited by the Franklin Institute Philadelphia, PA, to restore the 220-Year-Old, Inoperative Automaton)
See https://www.fi.edu/

To make this program more meaningful, be sure to watch the movie, “Hugo,” before the presentation!

During a private showing of the automaton, although it had been broken for many years, the Franklin Institute’s Senior Curator of Collections, and Charles Penniman, the automaton’s caretaker and exhibitor, demonstrated the distressed machine to the limited extent that it could be run. Based upon shared photos and video clips, Andy developed an understanding of its mechanical details.

As a restorer and engineer of mechanisms, Andy easily analyzed the automaton’s general principles of operation and distilled those observations into a brief description for Brian Selznick. At that time, Brian was actively creating what would soon become the award-winning book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” A fan of Andy’s pop-up books, Brian sent Andy a copy of his manuscript and some of his drawings for the book.

Andy was delighted to read the story, which was already essentially complete, and felt an immediate affinity for Hugo. And, as “all of the stars became aligned,” Andy was invited to restore the dormant poet-draughtsman clockwork figure. Andy identified and resolved the automaton’s primary defects and brought back nuances of movement that had not been seen for generations.

Through photos and rare video clips of the automaton’s inner workings, Andy conveys details of his rewarding experience, including explanations of the necessary steps to restore this masterpiece.
