“The Story Behind the Movie “HUGO” by Andy Baron (of Santa Fe, and invited by the Franklin Institute Philadelphia, PA, to restore the 200-Year-Old, Inoperative Automaton)
See https://www.fi.edu/
During a private showing of the automaton, although it had been broken for some years, the Franklin Institute’s Senior Curator of Collections, and Charles Penniman, the automaton’s caretaker and exhibitor, demonstrated the distressed machine to the limited extent that it could be run. Based upon shared photos and video clips, Andy developed an understanding of its mechanical details.
As a restorer and engineer of mechanisms, Andy easily analyzed the automaton’s general principles of operation and distilled those observations into a brief description for Brian Selznick. At that time Brian was actively creating what would soon become the award-winning book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” He sent Andy a copy of his manuscript and some of his drawings for the book.
Andy was delighted to read the story, which was already essentially complete, and felt an immediate affinity for Hugo.

Andy will review his rewarding experience and the story explaining the necessary steps needed to restore the automaton to full operation.

The large Amphitheater with Parade Field can hold up to 5,000 people and has been the venue for the NM Veterans Day parade/ceremony, Memorial Day ceremony, Japanese Festival, International Festival, and may other events.
The grounds can take you through the ages starting with Colonial New Mexico to New Mexico as a Territory through WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War and the “War on Terror” — all from a New Mexican perspective.
